#OneHourAugust Day 2
‘I know that I know nothing’ - Socrates
I work in marketing and even though I’d like to think I know a fair bit about the subject, I most certainly know that there is a lot more to learn. Particularly in my branch of the field, digital marketing, things are moving so fast that by the time you get the hang of some new technology, it’s already evolved and what you’ve just learned is old news.
So in order to be competitive in my field (and because I find it truly fascinating), I have to continuously improve and learn. Which is why I spent last night’s one hour learning the latest about blogging and vlogging.
Key learnings:
- It takes a while to build traction. People give up after a few months, but most content creators have been practising their craft for years. Don’t get disheartened if you don’t see results straight away.
- You have to have fun. That’s a must. You probably already have a 9 to 5 job, this has to bring you joy.
- You have to be authentic. Just be yourself.
- Whatever it is you want to say, there will be someone who wants to hear it/read about it. There are blogs and vlogs on virtually any topic you can think of. There is the usual stuff like parenting tips, health and beauty, fitness and well-being advice, travel, business etc. But there’s also tons of content on more sensitive topics such as how to deal with bereavement, the journey to recovery from suicidal thoughts, domestic abuse, living with a terminal illness etc. I was genuinely amazed at the depth, breadth and variety of content. So whatever your story, share it and I promise someone will listen.
- There is no magic pill or secret sauce to making it big in that space, so be yourself and have fun.
Final thoughts:
It’s amazing how much you don’t know about a subject you think you know well. Don’t get too comfortable with your existing knowledge. Go and seek more!
